OPSWAT Metascan Multi-Scanning Antivirus SDK Adds Additional Engine, New Features

San Francisco, Calif. (PRWEB) October 19, 2009

OPSWAT, Inc., the leading provider of software development tools and data services to power manageability and security solutions, today announced the release of a major update to Metascan antivirus SDK, an advanced engine for launching scan requests and obtaining scan results from eight built-in antivirus engines from AVG, CA, ESET, Norman, Quick Heal, Sunbelt, VirusBuster and ClamWin. Available as an Ultra, Lite or Core package, Metascan enables IT professionals and software engineers to deploy multi-scanning solutions, allowing users to effectively scan content with multiple antivirus engines.

Version 2.6 adds a significant number of features and enhancements. Including:

Boot sector scanning
Scan result caching
The addition of the Quick Heal antivirus engine
URL filtering
A remote client function, allowing users to scan files with a remotely deployed Metascan server using a single CLI

"No single antivirus application detects every threat every time. You can improve the detection capability of your scanning solution by using Metascan," said Toshit Antanti, Director of Engineering, OPSWAT, Inc. "The addition of the remote client and an eighth engine demonstrates OPSWAT's commitment to continually enhancing Metascan. The remote client makes it possible to separate the scanning server from the file or web server by performing scanning via a remotely installed Metascan server. We're excited to be able to provide customers with an improved server-level antivirus solution that delivers advanced file and content-filtering capabilities and the use of multiple scan engines."

Metascan cuts deployment time and expense by providing a single interface to manage all eight antivirus engines. The application can extract many files and file archives (including ISO, ZIP, MSI, etc), and detect over 400 file types including PDF, DOC and EXE formats. Metascan also easily integrates with third-party software and hardware via version 1.0 of the ICAP and an intuitive API.

OPSWAT Releases MetaDefender for Media Peripheral Media Scanning Solution

San Francisco, Calif. (PRWEB) January 12, 2010

OPSWAT, Inc. today announced that it has released MetaDefender for Media: a complete scanning station kiosk for organizations looking to protect themselves from viruses, worms, keyloggers, trojans and other malware which can be spread from peripheral media entering secure environments.

A simple and intuitive solution, MD4M prompts a user to insert their media and proceeds to scan the files with eight antivirus engines (from AVG, CA, ESET and others). After analysis, the user is given a simple summary as to whether or not a threat was discovered.

Previous deployments were limited to small, custom builds at high-security military or financial environments like Bank Leumi, Israel?s largest commercial bank. However, this marks the first time that a peripheral media scanning solution of this type will be available to the general public.

Product Features

????Automatic scanning ? whenever media (DVD, CD ROM, USB device, etc.) is attached to a protected device
????Simultaneous multi-engine scanning ? scan media using 8 different anti-malware products
????Archive scanning ? all common archiving methods are fully supported by the system: compression (zip, rar, etc.), installers (MSI, NSIS), embedded files in documents (Office, PDF)
????Automatic updates ? the scan engines do not have to be connected to the internet. When a new anti-malware data file is available, the data is sent from the management console to the scan engines and automatically installed
????Scan logging
????File type detection ? verify that a file's extension is accurate
????Supported operating systems: Windows 2000, Windows 2003, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 2008 R2, Windows 7

Why MD4M?

External media like USB drives are being an increasingly common threat vector for malware. After being hit with a worm that is typically spread from a USB drive, the U.S. Department of Defense went as far as to ban the use of thumb drives, flash memory cards, digital cameras, music players and personal digital assistants.

?Malware that infects media like USB drives takes advantage of a entryway that is difficult to lock down," said Benny Czarny CEO of OPSWAT. ?This malware includes the widely distributed, and infamous, Conficker worm, which is primarily spread through external media devices. Any company that values their security needs to create a policy for scanning these devices.?

As many comparative tests of antivirus applications have proved, no single product can detect all threats. MD4M includes up to 8 scanning engines which are optimized to perform extremely fast scanning on external media entering an organization. A product with several different engines and update patterns is ideal for protecting important data from intentional and unintentional transfers of malicious content.

Deployment

MetaDefender for Media is available either as a complete scanning station kiosk or as standalone software to integrate into another solution.

A demo version of the scanning station kiosk is available at OPSWAT?s head offices. Sales inquiries and resellers are encouraged to contact the OPSWAT sales department at sales(at)opswat(dot)com. A short video on MD4M is available on the OPSWAT media page.

OPSWAT Releases Highly Resilient Metascan 3.0 Antivirus SDK

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) July 22, 2010

OPSWAT, Inc., a leading provider of tools that power security solutions, today announced the release of a major update to the Metascan multiple antivirus SDK, an advanced engine for launching antimalware scan requests and obtaining scan results from multiple embedded antivirus engines such as AVG, CA, ESET, Norman, Quick Heal, Sunbelt, VirusBuster and ClamWin.

Available as an Ultra package, Lite package, Core package or special edition package that integrates the Sophos, McAfee and/or Symantec scan engines, Metascan enables IT professionals and software engineers to deploy multi-scanning solutions, allowing users to effectively scan content with several antivirus engines simultaneously.

The Metascan engine and SDK cuts deployment time and expense by providing a single interface to manage all embedded antivirus engines, presently numbering 8 in the Ultra package. The application can extract many files and file archives (including ISO, ZIP, MSI, etc), and detect over 400 file types including PDF, DOC and EXE formats.

With this adaptable SDK software engineers can integrate virus scanning to proprietary solutions including:

????Secure file transfer for any host that requires file either upload or download. For example any web site that accepts documents and requires protection against embedded threats.
????Document security management, Metascan enables users to scan documents for macro threats.

Version 3.0 thoroughly upgrades the application's architecture, radically increasing resiliency and scalability. In addition to engine performance enhancements, each optimized engine and component now runs in an isolated state-localizing the impact of any malfunction. If any single engine experiences a failure, the remaining engines will continue the scanning process undisturbed.

It also adds a significant number of other features and enhancements. Including:

????Multiple operating system support: Linux and Mac can use Metascan services installed on a separate server through Metascan Remote Connector.
????Improved watchdog monitor: a new auto-recovery feature enhances data protection in the event that one component fails
????Improved support for customers looking to use Metascan Core to manage their own licensed antivirus engines: Metascan includes support for managing McAfee, Symantec, Avira, Kaspersky, Sophos, Trend Micro and many others.
????Improved handling of encrypted archives

"No single antivirus application detects every threat every time. You can improve the detection capability of your scanning solution by using Metascan," said Toshit Antani, Director of Engineering, OPSWAT, Inc. "The improved architecture in this update provides a scalable foundation for future growth and demonstrates OPSWAT's commitment to continually transforming the product. We're excited to be able to provide security-conscious customers like financial and governmental institutions with a greatly improved server-level antivirus solution that delivers advanced file and content-filtering capabilities and the use of multiple scan engines."

"To allow for our customers to upload and attach their resume documents, we use OPSWAT's Metascan Antivirus SDK to manage our virus protection software product, McAfee VirusScan Enterprise; enabling us to scan the documents at point of entry with a high speed virtual RAM drive capability," said Philip Day, IT Manager, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Workforce Development System. "This ensures that we are not storing documents that may have viruses or trojans embedded, and that our stored files match their indicated file types."
